As a climate activist, Alice Wanjiru has an ambitious vision to plant at least 10 million trees by 2027. Wanjiru’s plan is to ensure that she contributes heavily in the ongoing campaign by the government to plant at least 10 billion trees in ten years. Her inspiration to achieve this vision is inspired by the understanding that over 55 million children in the world have been affected negatively by the negative effects brought about by the climate change.

Though the Green Hummingbird Movement, various strategies have been put in place to ensure that this noble goal is achieved. These strategies include but not limited to;

A tree for birthday campaign

Under this campaign and through the support by the Green Hummingbird movement, Wanjiru aims to convince as many children as can be possible to plant a tree during their birthday celebrations. And as a way to ensure this idea is embraced, the movement is willing to provide seedlings to children who are willing to plant tree at the afro forest or at any other available space during their birthdays.

Partnerships

The Green Humming Bird Movement is already working with other like-minded organisations. For instance, we are in partnership with Trees and Culture organization that has a commitment to restore the environment through various reafforestation activities.

From learning about environment to having round table discussions to create awareness amongst us and periodic tree planting activities. She is a member of the school’s environment club. As an environment champion, she plans to propose for an annual tree planning day in schools to be observed even in the school calendars.
