The Green Hummingbird Movement is a registered environmental conservation organization that was established in 2020. The purpose of this movement is to engage in various activities that contribute to the conservation of environment and the climate change at large. Its an organization by children inspired by adults who are environmentally conscious, friendly and responsible. The children in the movement, despite their age, join their efforts towards combating the current deadly crisis; the climate change. Alice Wanjiru, a nine-year old climate change activist, is the ambassador of the movement.

The organization has partnered and continues to work with like-minded individuals, organizations and the government’s initiatives that aim at ensuring bringing change to the environment with an understanding that there is no other planet to live in.

Majorly, the Green Humming Bird Movement has been planting trees at the Afro Forest.

Apart from planting trees, the Movement also does clean-up exercise and also engages in humanity work. Our aim is to inspire the current generation of kids and those younger than us so that we can have an environmentally responsible generation.

Why the name Green Hummingbird Movement?

image

The name of the of movement ‘The Green Hummingbird’ has largely been borrowed from the story by the late Wangari Maathai. She is a former Kenyan Assistant minister for Environment who won the Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution in conserving environment.

Wangari narrated a story of a little humming bird that saw the forest on fire. The bird didn’t watch, but tried to put small efforts to save the forest from the fire. The hummingbird did what the big animals were scared of doing.

Owing to the efforts being put by the young environmentalist, Alice Wanjiru, the name hummingbird was spiced up to form the Green Humming Bird Movement, with a mission to save the world from the effects of climate change other environmentalist such as Elizabeth Wathuti as well as Cabinet Secretary for Environment Soipan Tuya both of whom are women putting a lot of efforts to make Kenya green.

Alice Wanjiru, 11, has deep passion and interest for environmental conservation, and she has now become a climate activist and a champion of the Sustainable development goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015. Her love for conserving the environment started at a tender age.

Her inspiration has majorly been derived from the renowned environmentalist the late Prof Wangari Mathai, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution in environment conservation.

Through Green Hummingbird Initiative that has now given a shape to her vision, Wanjiru has been able to grow at least 20,000 trees and she hopes to realize a target of growing at least 10 million trees by 2032 through strategies that have now been set by the Foundation.

As part of realizing this objective, Wanjiru through organization is planning to capitalize on the Scouts’ numbers and launch a record of planting one million trees in five minutes, and hopefully to enter into the World Guinness book of record.

Wanjiru wants to inspire the current generation of kids and those younger so that there can be an environmentally responsible generation.
