Ruai Sewer Plant Restoration

image

The Green Hummingbird Initiative has given a special focus to Ruai Sewer Plant as a central agenda in environmental conservation. Sewer plants release methane gas freely. This methane gas has health effects and is hazardous. The gas also causes corrosion to the metallic objects, thus even huge infrastructure built using metals are at risk.

As part of the remedy, The Initiative has been engaging in tree planting activities. Currently, the Foundation has planted at least 2000 trees at the sewer-line. Further, the Initiative has petitioned the County government of Nairobi, to address the legal gaps that could help to develop technologies that can capture the methane gas for home consumption, or otherwise, there should be a commercial system for producing electricity.

The Ruai Sewage Plant also known as Dandora Estate Sewage Treatment Plant, has been operating since 1978, and it covers a 5,000 piece of land. it is estimated that on daily basis, the plant handles about 160,000 cubic meters of waste water and that it releases about 2,800 cubic meters of methane gas per day, making it a significant contributor to global warming.

Tree Nursery Establishment and Management

Tree Nursery Establishment and Management

Green Hummingbird Initiative has already initiated a tree nursery project which will ensure that tree seedlings are ever ready for sustaining the Initiative’s tree growing program. The Initiative appreciates that the tree nursery initiative plays a crucial role in fostering the growth of saplings, which in turn, contribute to the realization of the ambitious target in the Foundation’s tree-growing strategy.

Our pilot tree nursery is in Nairobi at the Afro Forest along the Eastern Bypass. In this project, Green Hummingbird Initiative has at least 5,000 seedlings. Plans are at advanced stages to ensure that, in collaboration with county governments and other like-minded stakeholders, the tree nursery initiative spreads across the country. We have also partnered with private tree seedlings vendors along the bypass who have benefitted from the Afro Forest space to establish small tree nurseries, thus contributing to the economic growth of the area.

Further, we are working with different learning institutions where the organization will continue setting up tree nurseries even as it educates the students on the best practices in managing the nurseries.

The Initiative is positioning itself to be a reliable distributor of tree seedlings even as the government targets to plant at least 15 billion by 2032.  By now, we have been instrumental in distributing tree seedlings during the Kenya Scouts Association tree planting events as well as to other organizations with similar initiatives. Up to 2000 tree seedlings have thus far been distributed.

The initiative focuses on the quantity and quality of the trees being planted, ensuring that they thrive and make a lasting impact on the environment.

Tackling Ocean Plastic Pollution

image

The Green Hummingbird Initiative’s strategy has been keen to ensure that in its bid to champion for environmental sustainability, includes the marine life conservation. This is a campaign that aims to reduce marine debris deposited along the pristine white sandy beaches such as fishing lines, cigarettes, plastic rubbish, single use plastic bags, man-made wastes among others.

Our premier campaign to this end has already been held in Mazingira Beach in Kilifi County where Green Hummingbird joined other stakeholders in cleaning the beach and sorting the trash during the 2024 World Oceans Day.

Our objectives include but not limited to, increasing awareness of the importance of Marine and Coastal resources, ensuring conservation of coastal and marine resources and to create awareness and education on marine survival and safety skills.

Protecting Sea Turtle

Protecting Sea Turtle

image

Sea turtles are endangered in Kenya due to poaching, habitat loss and accidental capture in fishing gear. They are killed for their eggs, meat, skin and shell. Erosion and construction are reducing the number of breeding grounds available to sea turtles.

Green Hummingbird Initiative is working closely with stakeholders to raise awareness in the community by hosting education sessions for local school children. We also help reduce the risk of pollution by participating in beach clean ups.

Hummingbird will also help in research and data collection, beach profiling, collecting sea grass, participating in sustainable fishing, and helping with community. Green Hummingbird has already engaged organisations along the Indian Ocean beaches that are engaged in sea turtle protection.

Mangrove Restoration Plan

image

Green Hummingbird Initiative aims to plant over one million trees in key mangrove habitats to fight climate change and alleviate poverty. Research has shown that over exploitation of mangrove, driven by local poverty, threatens Kenya’s Coastline.

As Green Hummingbird Initiative, we have taken the responsibility to restore these ecosystems by establishing nurseries and planting trees, thus offering sustainable livelihoods to ease pressure on natural resources. To achieve this noble dream, we are working closely with the Kenya Forest Service and the local authorities. Green Hummingbird kicked off Mangrove tree planting in Kwale County.

Colobus Monkey Conservation

image

Several species of colobus monkey are currently vulnerable through habitat loss, deforestation, hunting and the pet trade. In Kenya, colobus monkeys are found in various regions.

Green Hummingbird has visited and engaged the Colobus Conservation Center in Diani Forest, Kwale County which is one of the forests where colobus Monkey are found. Through the engagement and information shared by officials of the centre, we have identified land encroachment, habitat degradation, deforestation and poaching as the major threats.

This information is critical to the organization’s strategy in protecting the colobus monkey. Particularly, our strategy shall revolve around initiatives that shall lead to forest conservation, rehabilitation of rescued monkeys, public awareness programs, preventing illegal pet trade and reducing human impact

Sable Antelope Protection

image

The vanishing sable antelope are on the priority list of nationally endangered species in Kenya. Green Hummingbird Initiative is keen on ensuring that national conservation strategy is developed to guide all efforts to conserve the species for posterity.

Currently, the Ambassador is working closely with the county government of Kwale, so that the organization can lead the campaign to protect the sable antelopes. Green Hummingbird has a vision in future to establish a conservancy in Kwale County, that will help to safeguard the sale antelope.

Environmental Clean-up

As part of the Initiative’s effort to conserve the environment, we have been engaging in garbage management by organizing occasional cleaning exercises. We have a long-term plan to engage in recycling solid waste.

Capacity building & psychosocial support

The Green Hummingbird Initiative is building capacity to support children who may be disadvantaged in the society but are interested in environmental conservation. Our support system includes donating tree seedlings to the children and even educating those who come from poor financial backgrounds.

Partnerships & Collaborations

image

The Green Hummingbird Initiative recognizes the importance of collaborating with like minded partners. To this effect, we have partnered with the Kenya Scouts Association. We appreciate the wide network, strong structures and huge membership of up to 2.5 members.

The two entities have formulated a win-win partnership agreement. Under this arrangement, the Foundation shall benefit with the Association’s structure, network and labour while Green Hummingbird shall be instrumental in the KSA’s environmental and climate change agenda especially in resource mobilization.

Green Hummingbird Initiative has also formed a working agreement with Tree and Culture, an environmental grassroot organization based in Nairobi’s Ruai area. This organization has been in existence since 2006, and therefore, it shall be instrumental to the organisation as it implements the strategy.  The two organizations are working to plant and grow one million trees in three months. We have also developed a collaboration with the Kenya Defense Forces.

The Green Hummingbird Initiative’s ambassador Alice Wanjiru’s efforts to conserve the environment have been honoured by the Kenya Scouts Association. During the 2024’s World Environmental Day celebrations, Wanjiru was crowned to spearhead KSA’s climate change action.

She will now lead a 2.5 million membership of KSA. Her Crowing was witnessed by the then Environment Cabinet Secretary Ms Soipan Tuya, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, First Daughter Charlene Ruto among other senior environmentalists. The CS promised to help Wanjiru realize her dream.
